@RTbar The reason I ask is because I want a Rhodesian Ridgeback, But if that does happen then I will be specifically looking for one without the Ridge. |

@RedRebel8 I have seen it, and I still think what I said is correct, that the ridge is a trait, not a defect. It's not like the breeders found one or two freak puppies with ridges and decided to breed them, it's the ridge less ones that are a rare occurrence.
That is just a sensationalist documentary, as I don't think any breeders now a days cull ridge less puppies, almost all are placed into homes as pets. |

@RedRebel8 Healthier in the sense that there is no risk of dermoid sinus, then yes, but the ridge is a genetically inherited trait, not a defect. Look at the Thai Ridgeback, they are one of the healthiest, purest, and oldest breeds around and they have full ridges |

@t0mbeal You're actually better off having a Ridgeback without the Ridge. The Ridge is actually a deformation and causes spinal problems in the breed in its later life.
A Ridgeless, Rodesian Ridgeback is a healthier dog. |

I've seen may clips of dog fights and unfortunately from around the way. Most fights with pit bull type breeds ( short, muscular, powerful, large head, short fur) start off with the other dog winning, especially if its a large breed like rottie, shepheard and even other forms of massive, after a few minutes, the dog becomes exhausted and the pitbull starts to get the upper hand and just keeps attacking non stop and going for the underbelly and neck region. |

@maincourseistoocool Yep, that's because the Pit looks at the RB as a dog to dominate. The RB looks at the Pit as LUNCH. |

Further to that, a ridgeless Rhodie may not be accepted in the show ring because of the requirements of the breed standard, but it remains no less a Ridgeback. |

@RTbar I concur with you, RTbar. I have a purebred Ridgeback bitch. Every dog has 'hackles' which can rise when triggered through fear, aggression, etc. A true ridge of the Ridgeback breed is simply hair growing in the opposite direction which gives it the permanent look of being raised hair. It is permanently noticeable.
@t0mbeal Yes, just as any purebred can lack some expected physical trait of the breed standard, one can own a purebred Ridgeback which simply was not born with a ridge. |
